A quality-driven society, built patiently
Our story & legal framework
Lesotho Standards Institution PTY was founded by a working circle of engineers, food technologists and consumer advocates who kept meeting the same problem from different directions: goods entering the Lesotho market carried no consistent, publicly available benchmark of safety or quality. Producers wanted to comply. Buyers wanted assurance. Neither had a shared reference to point at.
The Institution was constituted as a non-profit body and formally registered in Lesotho under Registration No. 59725. Its constitution binds it to operate exclusively for public benefit — no distributable surplus, no shareholder dividend, no commercial ownership of the standards it publishes.
From a single food-handling guidance note circulated to district markets, our library has grown into a working national reference covering agriculture, construction materials, textiles, packaged goods, water and consumer information. Technical committees drawn from industry, academia and civil society review each document before publication.

How we handle public money
All grants, donations and partnership contributions are received into a single institutional account governed by the Board of Directors and reviewed annually by an independent auditor registered in Lesotho.
No board member receives remuneration for board service. Technical committee participation is voluntary. Programme expenditure — laboratory partnerships, training delivery, publication and community outreach — is reported in an annual public statement together with the audited accounts.
